On May 13, 2009, The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a massive ground beef recall (95,000 pounds) after the products were linked to an  outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. 

The ground beef recall affects all products listed below, which were manufactured by Valley Meats LLC.

S Brand Ground Beef Recall List

• 10-pound cases containing a total of 40 (4-1) “KEEP FROZEN 3/S 100% GROUND BEEF PATTY.” Each package bears the identifying case code “95554.”
• 10-pound cases containing a total of 60 (6-1) “KEEP FROZEN 3/S 100% GROUND BEEF PATTY.” Each package bears the identifying case code “95556.”
