Jeni’s Splendid Recalls Ice Cream Due to Listeria Hazard

Jeni’s Splendid Recalls Ice Cream Due to Listeria Hazard

April 23, 2015 — Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams of Columbus, Ohio, has issued a voluntary recall for all products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning.

No illnesses have been reported. The recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution” after Listeria was found in a random sample of ice cream tested by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

The recall affects all flavors and sizes of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches. The products were sold at Whole Foods grocery stores and retail locations in at least six states.

Jeni’s has closed scoop shops located in Columbus, Cleveland, Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Los Angeles, and Chicago until they are “100 percent confident every item we sell is safe.”

This is the second time an ice cream retailer has recalled all of their products this year. Earlier this month, Blue Bell Creameries recalled their products after Listeria was found in multiple products and facilities in Texas and Oklahoma. At least 10 people have been hospitalized, including three who died, after eating Blue Bell ice cream products since January 2011.

Listeria monocytogenes is commonly found in soil and water. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially for young children, older adults, and other people with weak immune systems.

According to the warning posted on Jeni’s website:

“Although healthy individuals infected by Listeria may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, infected pregnant women can suffer miscarriages or stillbirths.”
