What is Fungal Meningitis?

Fungal meningitis is a non-contagious disease that occurs when fungal spores infect the lining around the spinal cord. It causes extreme inflammation in the spinal cord and brain, which can lead to permanent brain damage, disability, or death. Several major outbreaks of fungal meningitis have been linked to Methylprednisolone Acetate, a steroid injection that is injected in the spine to treat back pain. If the injection is contaminated, it can introduce fungal spores directly into the lining of the spinal cord.

Fungal meningitis symptoms can include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Confusion
  • Altered mental status

Diagnosis: Fungal meningitis can take weeks to develop before it is diagnosed. Symptoms are often vague. They may resemble symptoms of other conditions, like arthritis. Therefore, anyone with new or worsening symptoms should contact a doctor immediately.

Treatment: Fungal meningitis can be deadly, and aggressive treatment is necessary to control the infection. Patients will be hospitalized and given intravenous (IV) medications, including a long course of high-dose anti-fungal drugs.

Compounding Pharmacies and Fungal Meningitis

This outbreak of fungal meningitis is eerily similar to another outbreak that occurred in October 2012. The outbreak was linked to vials of Methylprednisolone Acetate produced by a high-volume compounding pharmacy. Although compounding pharmacies are only supposed to be mixing made-to-order medications for specific patients, they produced thousands of vials of the drug on a mass scale. That outbreak sickened 741 people, of whom 55 died.
