Oil Spill Pollution

In recent decades, several massive oil spills have devastated coastlines in California, the Gulf Coast, Alaska, and more.

Some of the most serious oil spills:

  • Deepwater Horizon: In 2010, over 200 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days, devastating 16,000 miles of coastline in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
  • Exxon Valdez: In 1989, an oil tanker ran aground and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound, Alaska. Over 1,300 miles of coastline were covered in sludge, thousands of animals died, and the environmental impact persisted for decades.
  • Santa Barbara Oil Spill: In 2015, a 24-inch pipe carrying heavy crude oil burst and spilled over 100,000 gallons of oil on a beach near Santa Barbara, California. In 1969, the same stretch of beach was even more severely impacted when 3 million gallons of crude oil spewed from drilling-induced cracks in the ocean floor.

What is the problem?

The worst of these disasters involve heavy crude oil, a toxic sludge that severely impacts waterfowl and animal and is difficult to clean up. With high winds, oil slicks in the ocean can spread for miles. Oil destroys fur, bird feathers, and drowns marine mammals. On land, oil spills cause long-term contamination of sediments.

Health Problems

The health effects of oil spill pollution can also be very serious. Most types of oil contain carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals that vaporize into a gas. Touching oil can cause skin irritation. Swallowing small amounts (less than a cup of coffee) can cause stomach problems, vomiting, and diarrhea. Ingesting larger amounts can lead to long-term health problems.

Economic Impact

The economic impact of an oil spill can last for decades and cause billions of dollars in losses. Fishermen may be banned from using a fishing ground they depend on for their livelihood. Hotels, restaurants, and shops lose business because tourists stop visiting. It is not uncommon for thousands of people — or even hundreds of thousands — to join class actions and seek compensation for economic losses.
