What is Redline Energy?

Redline is an energy drink made by Vital Pharmaceuticals Inc. (also known as VPX Sports) that is marketed as a “dietary supplement.” Because it is sold as a supplement, it is less regulated by the FDA and there is no limit on the amount of caffeine it can contain.

What is the problem?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that “caffeine and other stimulant substances contained in energy drinks have no place in the diets of children and adolescents.”

The problem with Redline is that it contains caffeine-containing ingredients that are not separately listed, such as yerba mate. In addition to high amounts of caffeine, lawsuits claim Redline also contains yohimbe, a stimulant that can cause panic attacks and hallucinations, and vinpocetine, a plant extract that can cause nausea and anxiety.

Caffeine in Redline Energy

Redline is marketed as a fat-burning stimulant drink for bodybuilders. The original 8-oz bottle contains 250-mg of caffeine, making it one of the most highly-caffeinated energy drinks on the market. Other formulations contain varying levels of caffeine, including VPX Redline, RTD, Xtreme, Redline Liquid Caps, Meltdown, and more.

Redline Energy Class Action Lawsuit

In March 2015, Vital Pharmaceuticals settled a class action lawsuit filed by two people who claimed Redline energy drinks put them in the hospital. The case was settled for $5.49 after being denied class certification.

Plaintiffs claimed Redline was “unfit for human consumption” because it could cause chills, excessive sweating, vomiting, convulsions, chest pain, and rapid heartbeat.

The man who filed the lawsuit, Adam Mirabella, had a racing heartbeat for 10 hours after consuming Redline. He developed extreme chest pain that felt like a heart attack, lost sensation in his hands, had extreme nausea, and was hospitalized.

He accused Vital of deceptively marketing Redline as a safe source of energy when they knew it caused extreme side effects. Mirabella claims he and other consumers were injured because Vital failed to adequately warn about the risk.
