SlimQuick Lawsuit

SlimQuick Lawsuit

SlimQuick Pure Extra Strength is a weight-loss supplement that contains EGCG, an ingredient in green tea extract. Although green tea has antioxidant effects at low doses, SlimQuick contains EGCG at doses that can have pro-oxidant effects. Studies have linked SlimQuick to severe liver damage. EGCG is also associated with atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm) and other health risks.

SlimQuick and EGCG

SlimQuick Pure Extra Strength is a diet and weight-loss supplement distributed by Wellnx Life Sciences. It is marketed for a wide range of health benefits, including weight-loss, metabolism boosting, appetite reduction, stress relief, and more. SlimQuick contains “natural ingredients like antioxidants, and BioPure Green Tea.” This is an extract of the Camellia sinensis leaf that contains 45% epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).

What is the problem?

EGCG (Green Tea Extract), a toxic flavonoid found in green tea, can potentially cause severe liver and heart problems. It was once an ingredient in Hydroxycut, a weight-loss supplement that was pulled off the market in 2009 after at least 23 users developed liver failure, including one who died. Health authorities in France and Spain have banned EGCG supplements due to concern about liver side effects.

Study Links SlimQuick and Liver Toxicity

World Journal of Hepatology (April 2012) — Case report of severe liver toxicity in a 23 year-old woman who used SlimQuick for three months in preparation for a marathon. Researchers found that SlimQuick caplets contained 135-mg of EGCG. High doses can have hepatotoxic effects. Furthermore, the woman used SlimQuick while fasting and had a genetic risk-factor that increased her vulnerability to liver damage.

Symptoms of Liver Injury

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
  • Brown urine
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Light-colored stools
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite

EGCG and Heart Problems

Journal of Pharmacy Practice (2010) — Case report of a 63 year-old obese caucasian woman who developed abnormal heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) after taking EGCG in Hydroxycut for two weeks.

There may be a causal link between EGCG and heart problems. Given these risks, patients at risk of atrial fibrillation should not take SlimQuick or other supplements containing EGCG until more safety information is known.

According to the researchers:

“EGCG blocks the atrial-specific KCNA5 potassium channel. Loss of KCNA5 function has been reported in patients with familial lone AF [atrial fibrillation]. Thus, causal relationship between hydroxycut and AF in this patient is probable.”
