Like these other supplements, Versa-1 is used 30-90 minutes before working out to boost energy, suppress appetite, and build muscle. A 30-day supply of pills are sold for about $60 online and in retail stores like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe.

Versa-1 and Aegeline

The controversial ingredient in Versa-1 is aegeline, which is also known as N-[2-hydroxy-2(4-methoxyphenyl) ethyl]-3-phenyl-2-propenamide. The USPLabs website for Versa-1 indicates that aegeline is an extract of an Indian plant called Anacyclis Purethrum. They advertise it for appetite suppression and androgenic effects, including male sexual enhancement.

FDA Safety Warning for Aegeline in Versa-1, OxyElite Pro

The FDA published a Warning Letter for Versa-1 on October 11, 2013. They warned that aegeline in Versa-1 is not approved, and it may be linked to an epidemic of liver injuries in Hawaii.

The FDA warned:

“Oxy Elite Pro and VERSA-1 are adulterated under 21 U.S.C. 342(f)(1)(B) and 350b(a) because they contain a new dietary ingredient for which there is inadequate information to provide reasonable assurance that such ingredient does not present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury.”

VERSA-1 Liver Damage and Injuries

Versa-1 contains aegeline, the same controversial ingredient as OxyElite Pro. In 2013, a cluster of 24 cases of acute, non-viral hepatitis (liver inflammation) in Hawaii were linked to OxyElite Pro. At least 11 people were hospitalized with liver damage, 2 required liver transplants, and one person died. According to the FDA, aegeline is a new ingredient that has no history of safe use.

Symptoms of Versa-1 liver damage:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Upper-abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea, indigestion
  • Mental disorientation
  • Sleepiness
