November 17, 2012 — The New York Times has reported that 5 Hour Energy has been linked to 13 reports of death in the last 4 years. The FDA has confirmed that 13 deaths, 33 hospitalizations, and 92 reports of illness have been submitted.
The fatality reports were submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by Living Essentials, the company that manufactures 5 Hour Energy, in accordance with a 2008 law that requires supplement manufacturers to report fatalities to the FDA.
Living Essentials officials told the Times that they were “unaware of any deaths proven to be caused by the consumption of 5 Hour Energy.” The mere existence of a fatality report does not prove cause-and-effects. However, the number of deaths is concerning, especially considering that the FDA only received 17 total fatality reports for the entire dietary supplement industry in 2010.
