October 29, 2013 — According to a report by the New York Daily News, a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Red Bull by the family of Cory Terry, a 33 year-old man from Brooklyn who died of a heart attack shortly after consuming a Red Bull. His family is seeking $85 million in an energy drink lawsuit.
Terry died on November 8, 2011, about 45 minutes after consuming a Red Bull. He was playing basketball at Stephen Decatur Middle School. His official cause of death was idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, which is a type of cardiac arrest in which the heart suddenly stops beating. According to family members, Terry had no risk-factors for the condition. He was a construction worker, active, and did not smoke.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Red Bull has been associated with at least 21 adverse events between 2004 and 2012. These events include chest pain, dizziness, and fatigue. According to the complaint, at least 9 deaths are associated with Red Bull. The FDA has linked Monster energy drinks to at least 4 deaths. 5 Hour Energy Shots have been associated with 13 deaths.
This is not the first wrongful death lawsuit filed against an energy drink company. Monster is facing a lawsuit after a 14 year-old girl died of a sudden cardiac arrest after drinking two 24-ounce Monster energy drinks in a 24-hour period. Her official cause of death was caffeine toxicity that exacerbated an underlying heart condition.
