December 17, 2014 — The Senate and House of Representatives have unanimously passed a new law that would add 25 designer steroids to a list of controlled substances and give federal agencies greater authority to enforce and punish distributors of the drugs.
The problem is that manufacturers of bodybuilding supplements are reverse-engineering existing steroids and slightly modifying the chemical composition to evade drug-tests and the law.
Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the bill’s sponsors, warned:
“When taken by consumers, designer steroids can cause serious medical harm, including liver injury and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. They may also lead to aggression, hostility, and addiction.”
If signed into law by President Barack Obama, the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act (DASCA) would:
- Add 25 designer steroid ingredients to a list of Schedule III substances.
- Give the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) power to “temporarily” schedule designer steroids as controlled substances for up to two years
- Impose penalties — up to $500,000 per violation — on those who import, manufacture, or distribute designer steroids under false labels
- The Attorney General would be authorized to publish the names of products that contain designer steroids under false labels
