August 14, 2017 — A former Uber driver who caused a deadly car accident in Chicago is being held on $250,000 bail and was charged with reckless homicide.
The car accident was caused by Richard Massenburg, a 52 year-old Uber driver. He had the Uber app open at the time of the accident, but was not carrying any passengers.
A judge in Cook County charged Massenberg with 1 count of reckless homicide and numerous traffic violations related to the deadly crash.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Massenberg sped his 2015 Nissan Altima at 81 mph through a red light at the intersection of Diversey and Cicero Avenues at around 9:50 a.m. on June 11.
Massenberg hit several cars — including a car driven by 38 year-old Javier Castrejon, who was killed in the accident. Castrejon’s 42 year-old wife was seriously injured but survived.
The force of the collision sent Castrejon’s car into another car that was stopped at the red light, injuring a 28 year-old woman. Massenberg drove north on Cicero until he hit a 3rd car that was stopped at a light.
A spokesperson for Uber said Massenberg was immediately fired as soon as the company became aware of the car accident.
