Bard PowerPort Lawsuit Claims Catheter Leaked Chemotherapy

Bard PowerPort Lawsuit Claims Catheter Leaked Chemotherapy

July 19, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed by a man with cancer who was injured by a Bard PowerPort.

The plaintiff, John L., is a man from North Carolina who was implanted with a PowerPort in February 2022 for the delivery of chemotherapy to treat colon cancer.

In April 2022, he received an infusion of the chemotherapy drug Oxaliplatin. About halfway through the session, he experienced pain, burning, and swelling above the PowerPort site becasue chemotherapy medication was leaking into his body, according to the lawsuit.

However, doctors were unable to remove the PowerPort when the rupture was discovered due to the medication he had been given that day. Instead, he had to wait around 1 month to have the broken PowerPort device removed, which required another major surgery.

The lawsuit was filed against Becton, Dickinson and Co., et al., in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina — Case Number 1:23-cv-574.
