February 1, 2013 — The drug company Novartis has announced a voluntary recall of Theraflu Warming Relief and Triaminic Syrup because several children have unsealed the tamper-resistant cap and poisoned themselves. The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) published this recall notice after received reports of 12 children unscrewing the caps and 4 children drinking the cough syrups. One child had to be hospitalized.
Novartis first received reports of children opening the products in November 2012. All of the reports have been linked to Triaminic, but Theraflu is also being recalled because both products have the same type of cap.
The recalled products were all manufactured before December 2011 at one facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. The facility was closed that month and has not reopened.
According to the CPSC recall notification:
“These child-resistant caps can fail to function properly and enable the cap to be removed by a child with the tamper-evident seal in place, posing a risk of unintentional ingestion and poisoning. These products contain acetaminophen and diphenhydramine which are required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act to be sealed with child-resistant packaging.”
Health Canada has also published a recall notice. Products sold under the following brand-names are being recalled:
- Jack & Jill Cough Syrup
- Neo Citran
- Buckley’s Complete
- Triaminic
The recall affects 24 different types of Theraflu and Triaminic. The products were sold throughout the United States at major retail outlets between May 2010 and December 2011. Novartis estimates that 97% of the products have already been used.
The company is offering a full refund for customers who purchased the products. Customers can contact Novartis for a refund form and an address to send any remaining product.
