March 23, 2015 — Amy’s Kitchen and Wegmans Food Markets have issued recalls for frozen products containing spinach because it may be contaminated with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.
Amy’s Kitchen, a popular natural food brand, has recalled nearly 74,000 cases of lasagna, tofu scramble, enchiladas, and vegetable bowls.
Wegmans grocery stores have recalled about 12,500 packages of organic frozen spinach. The spinach was sold from January 27 through March 21, 2015 at stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
No reports of food poisoning have been linked to either recall.
However, infection with Listeria can be serious and even fatal — especially for people with vulnerable immune systems, young children, and frail or older adults. According to the FDA:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
Amy’s Kitchen has recalled a variety of products that used spinach as an ingredient, including:
- Vegetable Lasagna
- Tofu Vegetable Lasagna
- Garden Vegetable Lasagna
- Tofu Scramble
- Enchilada Verde Whole Meal
- Spinach Pizza
- Brown Rice & Vegetable
- Stuffed Pasta Shells Bowl
- Gluten Free Tofu Scramble Breakfast Wrap
- Gluten Free Dairy Free Veg Lasagna
