Baby Bathers Recalled for Infant Skull Fracture Injuries

September 4, 2012 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and Summer Infant, Inc. are announcing a voluntary recall of more than 2 million Mother’s Touch Deluxe Baby Bather products. The Baby Bather is a small seat that parents can place inside a bathtub to bathe their infant. The problem is that when the chair is picked up with a child inside, a manufacturing defect in the hinge can cause the baby to fall out of the seat.

There have been seven reported incidents in the United States. Five incidents involved infants who fell from the bather and suffered head injuries. Of these, four infants who were between 2 weeks and 4 months old suffered skull fractures. One of the four required intensive emergency room treatment for bleeding in the brain. The fifth infant had a bump on the head and required emergency room treatment.

The problem is that the folding wire frame can suddenly disengage from the side hinge, causing the infant to fall out of the seat. Since July 2007, the products have been made with a small-print warning that states: “Never lift or carry the bather with the infant in it.”

The products are manufactured in China and come in a variety of colors and prints. They have been sold in major retailers and online from September 2004 until November 2011 for $15-30. The adjustable side hinges allow the seat to be moved into two or three positions, but the seat does not lock in these positions.

Summer Infant is recommending that customers immediately stop using the products and contact the company for a free repair kit that includes a locking strap and installation instructions.

Health Canada has also issued a press release. Approximately 65,000 of the Baby Bathers were sold in Canada.
