BowFlex Dumbbells Recalled After 100+ Injuries
In June 2025, about 3.8 million BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells were recalled after 111 people were injured when the weight plates fell off the handle. The reports include severe impact injuries when people were hit in the head, foot, or body by a weight plate.
How To Identify Recalled BowFlex Dumbbells
The recall involves all BowFlex 552 or 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, which were sold in pairs or single units, between 2004 and May 2025.
All genuine BowFlex 552/1090 products in the U.S. are included in this recall and eligible for a remedy, regardless of whether or not the product’s serial number is listed here, according to the recall.
How Many People Were Injured?
BowFlex 552 and 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells were recalled after 349 reports of weight plates detaching, resulting in 111 injuries. These reports include people who suffered impact injuries when the weight plate hit them in the head, foot, leg, or body, including:
- Concussions
- Abrasions (scrapes)
- Broken toe bones
- Contusions
- Bruises
- And more
What Should I Do?
BowFlex 552 or 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells were sold between 2004 and May 2025.
They were originally sold by BowFlex (formerly known as Nautilus Inc.) until April 2024, when BowFlex was acquired by Johnson Health Tech Trading, which continued to sell the dumbbells until May 2025.
If your dumbbells were recalled and you bought them from BowFlex or Nautilus before April 23, 2024, you are eligible for a prorated refund voucher that can be used on products available on BowFlex.com.
If you bought your dumbbells before April 23, 2024, you are eligible for a free replacement dumbbell or voucher equal to the full purchase price.

Nautilus Recalls 17,000 BowFlex SelectTech Dumbbells for Injury Hazard
In 2012, the now-bankrupt fitness company Nautilus (later known as BowFlex) recalled about 17,000 BowFlex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells because the weight selector dial can fail, causing the weight plates to fall when the dumbbell is lifted out of its cradle. There were 3 reports of people who suffered serious injuries to their leg or foot when the weight plates fell off. The recalled dumbbells were sold from May to August 2011.
