December 11, 2018 — Breast implants were linked to over 12,000 injury reports in the last 12 months alone, according to an investigation by the Associated Press.
The investigators found over 8,000 injury reports in the first half of 2018, plus another 4,000 injury reports in the last half of 2017.
Before last month, however, it seemed like there were only 200 complaints about breast implant injuries because the FDA allowed manufacturers to report the injuries in bulk.
The number of injury reports suddenly jumped dramatically when the FDA ordered manufacturers to file individual reports for each injury.
The flood of complaints comes as the FDA investigates a rare type of breast cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) that is more common in women who have textured breast implants.
The FDA has been investigating the link between breast implants and cancer since 2011. Over 400 cases of ALCL have been reported, including 9 women who died of cancer after getting breast implants.
No one is sure why textured breast implants are more likely to be associated with cancer compared to smooth-surfaced implants. Some experts believe that bacterial contamination can persist on the textured surface, leading to low-level inflammation that increases a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer after many years.
