Bumbo Recalls 4 Million Baby Seats After Injuries, Skull Fractures

Bumbo Recalls 4 Million Baby Seats After Injuries, Skull Fractures

August 15, 2012 — Today, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a voluntary recall of 4 million Bumbo baby seats. The products have been linked to dozens of injuries, especially when the seats are placed on an elevated surface. According to the CPSC press release, “Babies can maneuver out of or fall from the Bumbo seat, posting a risk of serious injuries.”

Bumbo had previously recalled 1 million baby seats in October 2007. They placed additional warnings against using the seats on a raised surface, but injuries have continued to occur.

The CPSC and Bumbo are aware of at least 50 incidents since October 2007 in which babies fell from the seat while it was being used on a raised surface. An additional 34 injuries occurred when the seats were on the floor or at an unknown height. Of those, 19 children had skull fractures.

Children can fall or maneuver out of the seat. If the seat is on an elevated surface, they can fall and suffer life-threatening injuries. The most common injuries are bumps and bruises, but skull fractures have also been reported.

The baby seats were sold at Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies, Walmart, and other retailers who sell baby products. They have been sold from August 2003 until August 2012 for about $50. The product design consists of a single piece of molded foam with a round, flat bottom about 15 inches in diameter.

The CPSC and Bumbo are advising customers to immediately stop using the product. They should contact the company to receive a free repair kit, which consists of a new seatbelt with a prominent warning label, installation instructions, a new warning sticker, and safe use instructions.

When the seatbelt is installed, it should always be worn by a child sitting in the seat. The seat should never be used on a raised surface.
