Survivors of Sexual Abuse by Nuns

In November 2021, Salvatore Cernuzio published a book — called Veil of Silence — about the psychological, emotional and physical abuse of Catholic nuns in convents. Some nuns said they were sexually molested by priests. His book chronicled other types of abuse, including brutal labor, racism, and a culture of protectionism that allows the abuse to continue.

The introduction to Cernuzio’s book reads:

“They chose to protect the good name of the institution by sacrificing the victim. The abused nun is transferred, accused of seducing the priest, and the priest stays at his place, continuing his predatory activity undisturbed.”

Can I File a Lawsuit?

In recent years, many states have changed the laws regarding sexual abuse lawsuits to deal with a surge in the number of survivors coming forward. Some of these states have opened a window of 1 to 3 years, to allow survivors to file lawsuits against the Catholic Church. Other states have extend the time-limit to file a claim (statute of limitations).

$70,000 Settlement Paid to Survivor of Nun Sexual Abuse

In 1994, the Sisters of Charity agreed to pay a $70,000 settlement to a woman who was sexually abused by a priest as a child, and then again by a nun when she was 15 years old.

Examples of Sexual Abuse by Catholic Nuns

In July 2018, a New York woman claimed that a Franciscan nun of sexually abusing her with a crucifix when she was just 5 years old.

In December 2018, a woman in Ohio said a Dominican Sister of Peace molested her in 1982.

In March 2019, a Connecticut man reported that he was raped by a Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1963, when he was only 6 years old.

Sexual Abuse Lawsuits Against Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has paid more than $3 billion in settlements for child sexual abuse lawsuits in the U.S. alone, according to NPR. More than 6,000 Catholic priests have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse. In recent years, thousands lawsuits have been filed by survivors who blame church leaders for allowing the abuse to occur, letting abusers walk free, and covering up allegations of abuse.
