CDC Confirms 56 Liver Injuries from OxyElite Pro

CDC Confirms 56 Liver Injuries from OxyElite Pro

November 8, 2013 — OxyElite Pro has been associated with at least 56 liver injuries since April 1, 2013, according to USA Today and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The epidemic has sickened at least 43 people in Hawaii, and the rest of the injuries occurred on the mainland United States.

USPLabs still claims OxyElite Pro is safe. Based on the number of liver injuries in Hawaii, they said there should be more than 9,000 liver injuries on the mainland if OxyElite Pro were really causing liver damage. Even so, they have agreed to remove an illegal ingredient called aegeline and re-formulate OxyElite Pro.

Health officials in Hawaii caution that liver injuries could be vastly under-reported. The FDA has reviewed evidence supporting a “causal connection” between OxyElite Pro and liver damage.

According to a USA Today interview with Sarah Park, Hawaii’s state epidemiologist, Hawaii’s small population and island geography was an advantage that helped ensure a rapid response. Hawaii has only one liver transplant center. Doctors were the first to notice five unusual cases of liver damage in people who were healthy before starting OxyElite Pro. On the mainland, similar clusters could be easily overlooked as isolated incidents.

Once the outbreak was identified, epidemiologists in Hawaii quickly warned doctors to report liver injuries associated with OxyElite Pro. Health officials were also able to quickly embargo shipments of OxyElite Pro and remove it from store shelves.
