Cheese and Salsa Recalled for Listeria Food Poisoning Risk

June 6, 2014 — Parkers Farm Acquisition, LLC, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, is recalling certain types of cheese and salsa because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reported (PDF) that no illnesses have been linked to the products. However, consumption of Listeria can cause listeriosis.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and nausea. The infection is not usually life-threatening for healthy adults, but can be devastating for children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women can also suffer miscarriage or stillbirth.

Parkers Farm has recalled the following products:

  • 8-ounce Parkers cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar and port wine varieties with a sell by date of 5/21/2015.
  • 14-ounce Parkers cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar and port wine varieties with a sell by date of 5/20/2015.
  • 16-ounce Parkers salsa in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including hot, mild, garlic, and fire-roasted varieties with a sell by date of 9/19/2014.
  • 5-pound and 10-pound bulk foodservice products including cold pack cheese foods and cheese spreads with a sell by date of 2/17/2015.

This is the second major recall from Parkers Farm in the last few months. This March, over a dozen types of peanut butter, cheese, salsa, and spreads were recalled because they could be contaminated with Listeria. Products were distributed nationwide in major retailers.
