December 18, 2014 — After years of turmoil in the corn market, agriculture officials in China have approved Syngenta AG’s Viptera, a genetically-modified (GMO) corn seed.
The long-awaited announcement was reported by Reuters and confirmed by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang. China’s Ministry of Agriculture approved Viptera, also known as MIR 162, and two biotech soybeans from Bayer CropScience and DuPont Pioneer.
According to Reuters, three sources from Chinese corn importers confirmed that a bio-safety committee cleared the GMO corn seed from a food safety standpoint. However, final approval may not come until January or February next year.
Unlike Syngenta, Bayer has been waiting seven years to sell a soybean called LL55 while awaiting clearance from China.
Syngenta started selling GMO corn seed to American farmers in 2012. Although only 3% of corn acres were planted with the seed, much of the nation’s corn supply was tainted through cross-pollination and cross-contamination during storage and shipment.
When China rejected 1.2 million metric tons of American corn seed because it was tainted with trace amounts of Viptera, the price of corn plummeted and the industry lost an estimated $1 billion.
Syngenta is now facing class actions and a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in federal court in Kansas. The lawsuits are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in economic losses on behalf of major agricultural corporations and small farmers.
