Michael E. Schmidt of The Schmidt Firm, PLLC has stated, “Our law firm has represented thousands of victims in pharmaceutical side effect and recall cases, however being a father of four, this particular litigation [antidepressant-induced birth defects] really strikes home. We are actively representing the children and families affected by the manufacturer’s inability to warn the mothers of the potential for congenital birth defects when taken during pregnancy.”
Coarctation of the Aorta: An Overview
Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital (present at birth) heart defect characterized by a narrowing of the aorta, the main blood vessel carrying oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body. The condition most often occurs in the “juxta-ductal” part of the aorta, or the part near where the ductus arteriosus attaches. The defect can affect the body’s blood circulation because the left side of the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the narrowed aorta. In many newborns, coarctation of the aorta shows up with other birth defects such as a ventricular septal defects (VSD).
What Antidepressants Are Linked to Coarctation of the Aorta?
The following antidepressants are linked to the development of coarctation of the aorta in newborn babies, infants, and children if their mothers took them while pregnant:
- Paxil (Paroxetine)
- Zoloft (Sertraline)
- Celexa (Citalopram)
- Prozac (Fluoxetine)
- Lexapro (Escitalopram)
- Symbyax (fluoxetine and olanzapine)
- Wellbutrin (Bupropion)
- Effexor (Venlafaxine)
Coarctation of the Aorta Symptoms
Symptoms of coarctation of the aorta typically develop differently in each age group. In newborns, the condition can cause heart failure and shock. In children and adolescents, patients may have chest pain when exerting themselves, cold legs, or easily tired legs. Adults may have many of the same symptoms, but are more likely just to have high blood pressure without any symptoms at all. In some cases, adults with high blood pressure caused by coarctation of the aorta may have chest pain, heart attacks, strokes or heart failure.
