Counterfeit OxyElite Pro Blamed for Liver Injuries in Hawaii

Counterfeit OxyElite Pro Blamed for Liver Injuries in Hawaii

October 11, 2013 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating counterfeit OxyElite Pro in an outbreak of liver injuries in Hawaii. The manufacturer of OxyElite Pro, USPLabs, reports that fake products have been on the market for “some time.”

Simple internet searches reveal numerous message boards and blog posts from users who suspect they purchased counterfeit OxyElite Pro, usually over the internet. Reports date back to at least 2010, and most people report that the product had no stimulant or appetite-suppressing effects.

Hawaii News Now interviewed a fitness trainer, Angel Adams, who used OxyElite Pro for years. She said she purchased a “bad batch” last month, and believes it may be responsible for the epidemic:

“She compared the new bottles with previous bottles she had and said the packaging was slightly altered. Then she opened the purple capsules and says she noticed a difference in the texture and taste of the powders.  She believes counterfeit products could be what’s making people sick.”

The FDA stated that they will be inspecting USPLabs’ manufacturing facility in North Texas. They will also review manufacturing and shipping records to find out if USPLabs shipped the same products to Hawaii that were consumed by people who got sick.

In a Drug Safety Communication published October 8, the FDA warned:

“Because USPlabs LLC has informed FDA that it believes counterfeit versions of OxyElite Pro are being marketed in the US and have been on the US market for some time, FDA is also investigating whether counterfeit product is related to any of the cases of acute  hepatitis.”
