June 26, 2026 — A lawsuit has been filed against Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands by a woman who was burned by a Crock-Pot Express Crock Multicooker.
The lawsuit cites a recall for the pressure cooker that Sunbeam announced in November 2020 at least 99 people suffered burn injuries.
The plaintiff is a woman from Maryland who was burned about two years ago. The complaint explains that on June 20, 2024, she was using the pressure cooker to make food when the lid was removed while the unit was still pressurized. As a result, the scalding-hot contents blew out of the pot and burned her.
Her pressure cooker lawsuit was filed on June 16, 2026 against Sunbeam Products Inc. and Newell Brands, Inc. in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Gainesville Division (Case No. 2:26-cv-00201-RWS)
The complaint alleges this happened because the multi-cooker’s safety measures failed to keep the lid locked when the unit was pressurized. The lawsuit also alleges that the company did not redesign the product despite safer alternatives being available.
The complaint brings five counts against Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands:
- Strict products liability — the pressure cooker was defective and unreasonably dangerous for ordinary use
- Negligence — failure to use reasonable care in the design, manufacture, warnings, and sale of the product
- Breach of implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose — the cooker was not fit to cook safely
- Breach of implied warranty of merchantability — the cooker was not fit for its ordinary purpose
- Punitive damages — alleging the companies concealed the defect despite knowing the lid could detach under pressure
The complaint alleges the companies knew or should have known about the lid detachment defect, but continued to sell the pressure cookers and failed to warn consumers. The plaintiff is seeking compensatory and punitive damages and has demanded a jury trial.
According to the CPSC, the defect involves the multicooker’s ability to build pressure even when the lid is not fully locked. The agency described the hazard in its recall notice:
“The recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked. This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”

- Product: Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multicooker
- Model number: SCCPPC600-V1 (on the label on the bottom of the unit)
- Manufactured: July 1, 2017 through October 1, 2018
- Date codes: K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN (engraved on one prong of the electrical plug and on the bottom of the base)
- Sold at: Walmart, Target, and other retail stores nationwide, and online at Amazon and other online retailers, from July 2017 through November 2020, for between $70 and $100
What Should I Do?
The CPSC advised consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Crock-Pot in pressure cooker mode, but said it may continue to be used for slow cooking and sautéing. Sunbeam offered a free replacement lid through its recall page at recall.crock-pot.com or by calling Crock-Pot at 800-323-9519.
