More Depakene Information
Depakene, also known as valproic acid, is currently used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, major depression, migraine headaches and schizophrenia, although researchers are exploring other potential uses for the drug. While the drug helps many people, in December of 2009, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) warned doctors and patients that exposure to Depakene during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. The National Institute of Health estimates that the drug increases the risk of serious birth defects by three times. Birth defects associated with Depakene include spina bifida, other neural tube defects, craniofacial defects, cardiovascular defects, skeletal and limb defects, and “valproate syndrome”. The drug harms the fetus during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy and the likelihood of harm increases with higher doses.
Depakene Side Effects:
- Neural tube birth defects
- Craniofacial defects
- Cardiovascular malformations
- Cognitive impairment
- Valproate Syndrome
- Limb and skeletal defects
- Other serious birth defects
