December 3, 2012 — DMAA, a stimulant sports supplement, has been linked to dozens of injuries and at least two deaths. This has prompted the Department of Defense to ban sales of DMAA on military bases, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent warning letters to 10 manufacturers. Even so, most DMAA products can still be purchased online.
DMAA (also known as “geranium oil” or “dimethylamylamine”) is a stimulant drug that can constrict blood vessels, increase heart rate, and cause high blood pressure. These cardiovascular effects may increase the risk of heart attack, cardiac arrest, and death.
Despite the risk, the supplement remains popular among athletes. The Archives of Internal Medicine has reported that online retailers are still selling all 16 DMAA supplements online. This includes websites from manufacturers like USP Labs, which sells Jack3d and OxyElite Pro, two of the most popular DMAA supplements.
Dozens of other online retailers are also selling the products, including General Nutrition Centers (GNC), the largest supplement retailer in the U.S. The website drugstore.com was selling 8 out of 16 products mentioned in the FDA warning letters.
The study raises questions about whether the FDA is going to remove DMAA from the U.S. market. The FDA has the power to ban products that pose an “unreasonable” risk to the public health. Health authorities in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and several European countries have banned or restricted sales of the products. So far, the FDA has only requested that DMAA manufacturers submit applications for a “New Dietary Ingredient.” It is unclear whether any manufacturers have complied with this requirement.
