What is the Problem?
Dilantin is a prescription anti-seizure medication for people with epilepsy and other neurological disorders. High doses of Dilantin or long-term treatment with Dilantin can lead phenytoin toxicity. This side effect may increase the risk of cerebellar degeneration in the brain.
Phenytoin Toxicity
Phenytoin toxicity is rarely fatal, but it can cause serious neurologic problems and other symptoms of brain damage, such as a loss of muscle control, rapid eye movements, or coma. It is also possible that Dilantin can accumulate in the brain or cause cerebellar degeneration. The cerebellum controls movement, coordination, and balance.
Signs & Symptoms of Phenytoin Toxicity
A person who develops phenytoin toxicity after taking Dilantin may suffer from uncoordinated movements, loss of balance, problems walking, tremors, memory loss, confusion, slurred speech, and more.
Studies Linking Dilantin and Phenytoin Toxicity
The evidence linking Dilantin and phenytoin toxicity date back to the 1980s, such as this study in which 5 patients developed cerebellar degeneration while taking Dilantin. In recent years, numerous studies have found more evidence linking Dilantin and phenytoin toxicity — but patients may not be aware of the risk.
