UPDATE: Dixie Fire Becomes Largest Single Wildfire in California History

As of August 8, only 25 days after the Dixie Fire started, it exploded in size fueled by dry forests, low relative humidity and strong winds. It burned over 463,000 acres to become the largest single wildfire in California history.

“Despite valiant efforts of firefighters, aerial resources and law enforcement to protect life and defend property, fire spread into the community of Greenville,” according to fire officials. The fire destroyed the historic Gold Rush town of Greenville, burning 91 buildings and damaging 5 others.

What is the Dixie Fire?

The Dixie Fire began on July 13, 2021, above the Cresta Dam in the Feather River Canyon area of Northern California.

What Happened?

Within 2 weeks, the Dixie Fire burned over 244,000 acres (325 square miles) in Plumas, Butte and Tehama counties, destroyed more than 45 homes, threatened thousands of structures, and forced around 8,000 people to evacuate.

At the end of July, the size of the Dixie Fire jumped significantly when it merged with the Fly Fire in the Lassen and Plumas national forests.

By early August, the Dixie Fire had burned over 400,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes, including the historic town of Greenville. “It has been burning in extremely steep canyons, some places where it is almost impossible for human beings to set foot on the ground. It’s going to be a long haul,” said Rick Carhart, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

PG&E Admits Liability in Dixie Wildfire Lawsuits

According to the incident report, on July 13, PG&E’s outage system indicated that Cresta Dam off Highway 70 in the Feather River Canyon had lost power.

The responding repairman saw what appeared to be a blown fuse, but he was not able to reach the pole for several hours due to challenging terrain. He later confirmed that 2 or 3 fuses had blown and a tree was leaning on a conductor. He also saw fire on the ground near the base of the tree, which grew to 10-15 acres by that evening.
