Dupixent and Skin Cancer
Dupixent (dupilumab) has been linked to Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL), a type of skin cancer that occurs when white blood cells called T-Lymphocytes grow out of control and multiply in the skin.
What is Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma?
CTCL is a slow-growing, chronic type of lymphoma affecting the skin. While treatable, CTCL is generally considered not curable. While most cases are not life-threatening, CTCL can progress rapidly to a dangerous disease with severe symptoms, especially if the abnormal T-cells spread from the skin to the lymph nodes, blood, or organs.
Warning Signs & Symptoms of CTCL
Here are some common symptoms that people with CTCL experience:
- Rash
- Red, scaly, flaky, or itchy patches of skin
- Itching (may be very severe)
- Dry skin
- Skin may feel hot, sore, or burning
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Patches of skin discoloration
- And more
Dupixent Linked to CTCL With Rapid Progression
One of the most alarming findings from recent studies of Dupixent has been reports of CTCL that progressed rapidly to an advanced disease, rather than remaining a slow-growing chronic lymphoma.
For example, a 2024 study by Dr. Jenna Mandel found an increased risk of CTCL from Dupixent, based on dozens of case reports. The experts warned:
“To date, there have been a total of 39 documented CTCL cases following dupilumab use for treatment of AD worldwide, many of which progressed rapidly to advanced-stage disease.”
FDA Investigates Reports Linking Dupixent and Cancer
The FDA is investigating evidence linking Dupixent and skin cancer, including several scientific studies and dozens of reports of patients who were diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL).
In the October—December 2024 Update: Potential Signals of Serious Risks, the FDA said it is “evaluating the need for regulatory action” on the link between Dupixent and T-Cell Lymphoma.
What is Dupixent?
Dupixent® (generic name: dupilumab) is an injectable anti-inflammatory medication that treats conditions like eczema, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and more.
What Pharmaceutical Companies Developed Dupixent?
Dupixent was jointly developed by two pharmaceutical companies, Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. It received its first FDA approval in March 2017 for adults with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema).
What is Dupixent Approved to Treat?
The FDA has steadily expanded approvals for Dupixent to include a variety of conditions, including:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Eczema
- Asthma
- Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
- Prurigo nodularis
- Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis
- Bullous pemphigoid
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- And more
Are Lawsuits Being Filed?
Law firms are investigating potential Dupixent lawsuits for patients who were diagnosed with skin cancer and CTCL. The plaintiffs are pursing legal claims against Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for failing to adequately warn patients and doctors about the risk of this severe, life-threatening side effect.
How Can a Lawsuit Help?
Lawsuits are commonly filed by people who are injured by serious side effects of medications. In some cases, the lawsuits are grouped together into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which is similar to a class action lawsuit. Unlike a class action lawsuit, each person who files a lawsuit in the MDL has their own attorney to advocate for them.
Can I Join a Class Action Lawsuit?
There is currently no class action lawsuit for people who used Dupixent before they were diagnosed with skin cancer or CTCL. Instead, lawyers are evaluating cases for individual lawsuits.
How Much Is My Lawsuit Worth?
Every case is unique and there is never a guarantee of a settlement or financial payout, but people who file lawsuits for medication injuries typically seek damages for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, decreased quality of life, or wrongful death of a loved one.
