Family Farmstead Raw Cheddar Recall for E. Coli

In October 2026, Family Farmstead Dairy, a company based in New York, announced a recall for a batch of Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese that may be contaminated with two strains of E. coli. The strains were identified as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2 (STEC), which can cause serious food poisoning infections. No illnesses were reported.

Family Farmstead revised their original recall announcement with corrections. The first version reported the strain as O157:H7. This was later corrected to E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2, which are Shiga-toxin producing strains of E. coli (STEC).

What Cheese Was Recalled?

The recall involves the following product:

  • Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese
  • Lot code: 7/22/27
  • Best By date: 7/22/27

The samples that tested positive of E. coli were sold under the label “Family Farmstead A2 Raw Cheddar,” in an 8 oz package, with the same 7/22/27 date.

Where Was It Sold?

The cheese was distributed to retailers in 7 states, and possibly redistributed further to other states:

  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • Massachusetts

How Was E. Coli Found?

Family Farmstead said state health officials in Maryland isolated two strains of E. coli in 2 samples of the cheese. No illnesses were reported in the recall.

However, there was a separate E. coli outbreak that was linked to Raw Farm® raw cheddar. This outbreak occurred in early 2026, and more than half of the victims were children under 5 years old, according to the CDC Investigation.

What is E. Coli?

E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2 are two strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). These strains are less common than the O157:H7 strain, but they can also lead to serious complications like bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).

What Are the Symptoms of E. Coli Food Poisoning?

According to the CDC, most people with an E. coli infection experience diarrhea, stomach cramps that can be severe, vomiting, and low fever.

The CDC urges you to seek medical attention for serious diarrhea or vomiting lasting 2 days or more, bloody stool or urine, a fever above 102°F, and symptoms of dehydration or kidney problems due to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).

What Should I Do?

Family Farmstead Dairy urges customers not to eat the recalled cheese. You can throw it away or return it to the store for a full refund. Call (607) 397-4044 or email customerservice@familyfarmsteaddairy.com for more information.
