Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch Recall
In March 2022, Fitbit announced a worldwide recall for 1.7 million Fitbit Ionic smartwatches because the battery can overheat and cause serious burn injuries.
What Happened?
Fitbit issued the recall after 115 reports in the U.S. (and 59 reports internationally) or the lithium-ion battery in the Ionic smartwatch overheating. In some cases, the battery became extremely hot and caused 3rd-degree burns, according to Fitbit.
How Many People Were Injured?
In the U.S., there were 78 reports of people who were burned by their Ionic smartwatch battery, including 4 people with 2nd-degree burns and 2 people with 3rd-degree burns. Internationally, another 40 people reported burn injuries.
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled Ionic smartwatches were sold nationwide at Best Buy, Kohl’s, Target, other stores and online at Amazon.com and Fitbit.com from September 2017 through December 2021 for $200 to $330.
Was My Fitbit Recalled?
This recall only involves the following Fitbit Ionic smartwatches:
Model | Color |
Ionic FB503CPBU | Slate Blue/Burnt Orange |
Ionic FB503GYBK | Charcoal/Smoke Gray |
Ionic FB503WTGY | Blue Gray/Silver Gray |
Ionic FB503WTNV | Adidas edition, Ink Blue & Ice Gray/Silver Gray |
Fitbit Recall for Skin Irritation and Burns
Fitbit said the Ionic recall “is not related to skin irritation,” which is another issue that affected about 1 million Fitbit Force activity-tracking wristbands, which were recalled in March 2014. That recall was prompted by reports of more than 10,000 people who suffered blisters, rashes, and burns.
