Food Service Breakfast Trays Recalled for Listeria Risk

Food Service Breakfast Trays Recalled for Listeria Risk

October 8, 2014 — Buddy’s Kitchen has issued a recall for 31 tons of breakfast food due to a possible risk of food poisoning.

Buddy’s Kitchen is based in Minnesota and produces about 100,000 meals per day. The products include pre-packaged trays that are sold to airlines and other food-service industries, including retail stores, convenience stores, vending machines, speciality restaurants, and senior living facilities.

The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) tested products from Buddy’s Kitchen and found a positive sample of Listeria monocytogenes. Over 62,000 pounds of food were recalled as a precaution, but no reports of illness have been linked to the products.

Buddy’s Kitchen held the product and determined the source of contamination was red-skinned potatoes from an independent supplier. Listeria is commonly found in soil and it can easily contaminate potatoes or other root vegetables that are not washed thoroughly.

Infection could cause listeriosis, a severe type of food poisoning that typically causes symptoms like diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, and more. The most severe infections spread to the bloodstream. In pregnant women, infections often cause miscarriage, premature birth, or stillbirth.
