Heating Pad Recalled After 4 Serious Injuries Reported

In March 2026, the FDA issued an Early Alert about a risk of serious burn injuries and fire hazards from Handy Solutions® Neck & Shoulders Heating Pad (Model 25607).

The manufacturer, Navajo Manufacturing Company, also sent a letter urging customers to immediately stop using the heating pads due to the safety risks.

How Many People Were Burned?

As of March 10, 2026, the company reported 4 serious injuries associated with the Handy Solutions Neck & Shoulder Heating Pads. No deaths were reported, but the FDA classified this as a potentially high-risk device issue.

How To Identify Recalled Heating Pads

Consumers can identify the heating pads with the following information:

  • Product Name: Handy Solutions Neck & Shoulders Heating Pad
  • Model: 25607
  • UPC: 024291256076
  • UDI: 00024291256076

What Is the Problem With This Heating Pad?

The heating pad can potentially overheat and cause burn injuries. When the device is folded while in use, the power density concentrates in the folded area, and it can get dangerously hot.

The heating pad is unable to detect abnormally high temperatures, and it will not automatically shut off. Users may notice a burning smell before the device overheats, but that may be the only warning they get before a serious burn or fire occurs.

According to the FDA Early Alert:

“If the heating pad is folded while in use, the power density increases in the folded area causing excessive temperatures in that area. The device is unable to detect the higher temperature and does not automatically shut off when hazardous temperatures are reached.”

What Is a Heating Pad?

A heating pad is an electrical device that is used for medical purposes to delivers dry heat therapy to a specific area of the body. Heating pads are commonly used to relieve muscle tension, stiffness, joint pain, and soreness in the neck, shoulders, and back.

The Handy Solutions Neck & Shoulders Heating Pad is specifically shaped to drape over the neck and shoulder area, making it popular among people seeking relief from everyday aches, tension headaches, and chronic pain in their neck, shoulders, and back.

How Does It Work?

Most electric heating pads work by passing electrical current through a resistive heating element that is woven into the pad’s fabric. As electricity flows through the element, it generates heat that radiates outward toward the skin.

Safe heating pads are designed with temperature sensors and automatic shut-off mechanisms to prevent the pad from overheating.

The problem with the recalled Handy Solutions Neck & Shoulder Heating Pad is that when the pad is folded (something users do naturally when adjusting how the pad sits on the body) the heating elements overlap and concentrate heat in a small area.

Why Are Heating Pad Burn Injuries So Serious?

Burns from heating pads are among the most underestimated injuries in consumer products. Because heating pads operate at relatively low temperatures compared to open flames, users often do not realize a burn is forming until the injury has occurred.

This is especially dangerous for people who are using the pad while resting, sleeping, distracted, sick, or otherwise unable to understand what is happening and remove the pad.

Neck & Shoulder Burn Injuries

Burns to the neck and shoulder area can range from mild redness to deep tissue damage. Burns in that region can affect skin, muscle, and nerve tissue. In severe cases, burns can require hospitalization, skin grafting, or long-term wound care. Even a moderate contact burn in a sensitive area like the neck can be extremely painful and debilitating.

Fire Hazards When a Heating Pad Overheats

In addition to serious burn injuries, an overheating heating pad can potentially ignite bedding, upholstery, clothing, or other flammable materials nearby. This creates a risk of property damage and, in worst-case scenarios, residential fires.

The FDA alert specifically notes that this issue “may cause burns to persons and/or melting or burning of surrounding property.”

Users should also be aware that a burning smell may be the only warning sign before the device reaches dangerous temperatures. By the time a smell is noticeable, the heating element may already be at a temperature sufficient to cause injury or property damage.

How Many People Were Injured?

As of March 10, 2026, Navajo Manufacturing Company has reported 4 serious injuries linked to this issue. Because the FDA Early Alert process is ongoing, additional injuries may be reported as the investigation continues.

Reported injuries associated with this heating pad include:

  • Burn injuries to the skin
  • Damage to surrounding property from melting or burning

What Should I Do?

The FDA and Navajo Manufacturing Company are urging all consumers with this heating pad to take the following steps immediately:

  • Stop using the heating pad right away
  • Cut the power cord before disposal
  • Dispose of the device entirely — do not donate or resell
  • Watch for contact from the platform where you purchased the pad regarding a replacement
  • Report any adverse reactions or quality problems to the FDA through MedWatch, or by contacting Navajo Manufacturing at 1-800-525-5097

For updates as the investigation continues, consumers can monitor the FDA Early Alert page.
