What Happened?
Ground beef in HelloFresh meal kits that were distributed from July 2 through July 21, 2022 have been linked to an E. coli outbreak.
HelloFresh Meal Kits Linked to E. Coli Outbreak
In September 2022, the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a Public Health Alert after investigators determined that raw ground beef in certain HelloFresh meal kits was the likely source of an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 food poisoning.
How Many People Got Sick?
As of September 12, 2022, the CDC reported that 7 people were infected with E. coli O157:H7 after eating ground beef in HelloFresh meal kits. The illnesses were reported in 6 states between June and August 2022, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.
Six people were hospitalized due to a severe E. coli illness. The 6 states where cases were reported are: Maryland (1), New Jersey (2), New York (1), Pennsylvania, (1), Virginia (1) and Washington (1).
There may be additional illnesses that were not reported, according to the CDC:
“The true number of sick people in an outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for E. coli.”
What Product Was Recalled?
No recall was requested because the HelloFresh meal kits had already been distributed — but consumers may still have some of the contaminated ground beef in their freezers.
HelloFresh meal kits with with potentially contaminated ground beef were shipped to consumers between July 2 and July 21, 2022. They may be identified by the following information on the package:
- HelloFresh 10-oz. plastic vacuum-packed package containing “GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN/15% FAT” with codes “EST#46841 L1 22 155” or “EST#46841 L5 22 155” on the side of the packaging.
Health Officials Investigate E. coli Outbreak Linked to HelloFresh Meal Kits
Food safety investigators determined that “raw ground beef is the probable source of the reported illnesses. Traceback information identified that multiple case-patients received ground beef produced at establishment M46841 and distributed by HelloFresh in meal kits from July 2-21, 2022.”
Ground Beef and E. coli
Ground beef is a recurrent source of E. coli outbreaks and recalls. The problem is that cows often carry E. coli in their intestines, and during the slaughter process, fecal matter sometimes contaminates the meat that is used in ground beef.
Symptoms of E. coli Infection
- Severe stomach cramps
- Diarrhea (often bloody)
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Dehydration
- Kidney failure
- Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
