Janumet and Pancreatitis
Janumet (sitagliptin / metformin) is an anti-diabetes drug. The sitagliptin in Janumet stimulates cells in the pancreas to make more insulin, which is a hormone that lowers blood-sugar levels.
Unfortunately, Janumet has also been linked to several cases of pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation), including hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis. If the inflammation is not reduced for more than a few days, pancreatic tissue can break down, bleed, die (necrotize), and become infected. This can cause sepsis (blood infection), multiple organ system failure, and death.
Janumet Pancreatitis Symptoms
Janumet pancreatitis symptoms emanate from the pancreas, which is a pear-shaped organ that is about 6 inches long. The pancreas is located deep inside the abdomen, behind the stomach, and above the intestines.
The hallmark Janumet pancreatitis symptoms are severe, persistent upper-abdominal pain that may or may not be accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting. These symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor — although most cases of pancreatitis are mild, there is no way to tell from the symptoms if pancreatitis will become hemorrhagic or necrotizing.
Janumet pancreatitis symptoms could include:
- Upper-abdominal pain, which may:
- Be severe and persistent
- Radiate to the back (“back pain”)
- Get worse after eating or while lying down
- Nausea, vomiting
- Indigestion
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite, not eating
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Rapid heart-rate, high blood-pressure
- Malaise (feeling sick)
- And more
