Januvia Lawsuits
In March 2013, the FDA issued a Safety Communication for Januvia after a study found evidence of pre-cancerous growths that could become malignant. Lawsuits accuse drug-makers of negligence for failing to adequately warn about side effects like pancreatic cancer.
In August 2013, federal judges created a Multi-District Litigation (In Re: Incretin Mimetics Products Liability Litigation MDL) to centralize lawsuits involving side effects of Januvia and other diabetes drugs in the “incretin mimetic” class. Two years later, the litigation contained over 750 lawsuits. The cases are pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California under Judge Anthony Battaglia.
Studies Link Januvia and Pancreatic Side Effects
In 2011, the medical journal Gastroenterology published a study that linked Januvia to an increased risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The research was based on a review of adverse events that were voluntarily submitted to the FDA from 2004 until 2009.
In June 2013, the British Medical Journal published an editorial describing the growing number of studies linking new diabetes drugs to pancreatic cancer. Experts are concerned about the lack of warnings regarding the risk.
