February 2, 2022 — Kia has recalled more than 410,000 vehicles because the airbags may fail to deploy in a car accident.
The recall involves the following Kia vehicles:
- 2017 Kia Forte Koup
- 2017-2018 Kia Forte
- 2017-2019 Kia Sedona
- 2017-2019 Kia Soul
- 2017-2019 Kia Soul EV
Kia announced the recall after the airbag problems surfaced in Korea back in July 2021. There were 13 customer complaints and 947 warranty claims related to the airbags. No crashes or injuries were reported.
Kia blamed the problem on the airbag control unit’s computer cover, which could damage the open circuit. The problem could cause the Airbag Warning Light to illuminate and prevent the airbags from inflating in a car accident, which increases the risk of injury or death.
Kia said it expects to notify owners starting on March 21. When repairs are available, owners will be able to take their cars to a local Kia dealership for a free inspection and airbag replacement.
