Pfizer’s cholesterol-lowering medication Lipitor (atorvastatin) has been associated with a wide variety of side effects, including type-2 diabetes.
Lipitor Side Effects
Lipitor (atorvastatin) was the most popular drug in the world for more than a decade, until the patent expired in November 2011. Millions of people still take generic Lipitor and other cholesterol-lowering medications in the statin class. These drugs work by preventing the liver from producing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol.
Lipitor side effects include:
- Type-2 diabetes
- Muscle pain or damage
- Myopathy
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Kidney damage and failure
- Liver damage and failure
- Memory loss
- Death
Lipitor and Type-2 Diabetes
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned about the risk of Lipitor and type-2 diabetes in a Drug Safety Communication published in February 2012. The FDA found that Lipitor could elevate blood-sugar levels and reduce glycemic control. Diabetes is one of the most serious side effects of Lipitor because it has many complications — including heart disease, kidney damage, liver damage, and more.
