Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Spill Information
Fishing, food, and wildlife are the heart of the Louisiana Gulf Coast, not only the heart of the economy but the heart of the people. Because of the BP oil rig explosion and subsequent oil spill, the people of the Louisiana Gulf Coast are facing a catastrophic event, only a few short years after the devastation of Katrina.
“It is of grave concern,” said David Kennedy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “I am frightened. This is a very, very big thing. And the efforts that are going to be required to do anything about it, especially if it continues on, are just mind-boggling.”
Louisiana’s fishing and tourism industries, two of Louisiana’s main sources of business in the Gulf area, are likely to be the hardest hit. For example, half of the roughly 23,000 Plaquemine Parish residents make their living on the water. Commercial fisherman Ben Vodopija expressed great concern over losing the oysters and shrimp that are two huge sources of income for so many businesses and families in the area. “We don’t know what’s going to happen with all this and it could be real, real bad,” he says. “We might not be fishing for three years after this.”
Fishing and seafood are also huge sources of tourism in the Gulf Coast area. The restaurants, hotels, and all other businesses dependant on tourism are also facing huge losses in business. These economic losses could last for years. For Louisiana Gulf Coast residents and businesses, the oil spill and the tremendous economic impact is even more devastating since these are the some of the same areas that are just rebounding from Hurricane Katrina.
