ManukaGuard Nasal Spray Recalled for Infection Risk

In February 2021, NDAL MFG Inc. recalled ManukaGuard® Allercleanse Manuka Honey Nasal Spray (Lot #2010045) due to a risk of “life-threatening fungal infections,” according to the recall notice.

What is the Problem?

The recalled batch of ManukaGuard Allercleanse Nasal Spray was found to be contaminated with yeast fungus, which could cause infections if it is sprayed into the nose.

Who Is Most At Risk of Infections?

Children, adults, and elderly people who develop infections may need medical or surgical intervention. People with compromised immune systems could develop a life-threatening or deadly infection if they use the product.

What Nasal Sprays Were Recalled?

ManukaGuard Allercleanse is a liquid nasal spray that is used by people with allergies or irritated nasal passages and sinuses.

The product was sold in a cardboard box with UPC 858631002128, Lot #2010045, and an expiration date of BB 10/2023. It was sold nationwide in the U.S. at grocery stores, pharmacies, vitamin retailers, other stores, and online at Amazon.com.

What Is a Fungal Sinus Infection?

Fungal sinus infections can occur when yeast is inhaled, causing inflammation. The sinuses are dark and wet — an ideal environment for fungi to grow and invade.

Most fungal infections in the sinuses do not spread to surrounding tissue, but if they do, the consequences can be devastating.

Invasive fungal infections can spread to the blood vessels, eyes, brain, and central nervous system. Invasive fungal sinusitis is rare, but it has a high mortality rate in people with weak immune systems.

Treatment may involve a combination of anti-fungal medications and surgery to physically remove the fungus, mucus that contains the fungus, and infected tissue that is dead or dying.

Symptoms of Fungal Sinus Infections

  • Congestion
  • Facial pain
  • Swelling of face, cheeks, or eyelids
  • Discharge from the nose
  • Loss of smell, or bad smell in the nose
  • Face numbness
