March 31, 2021 — The Maryland Department of Health is warning that La Cieba, La Colonia, or Selectos Latinos cheese (queso) may be contaminated with E. coli or Staph bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
The following types of cheese may contain harmful E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) bacteria:
- Cuajada el Terron
- Queso Morolique con Chile
- Queso Con Loroco
- Queso Con Chile
- Queso Frijolero
- Queso Duro Blando Salvadoreno
- Queso Salvadoreno
- Queso Seco Salvadoreno
The safety warning did not include any information about packaging, stores where the cheese was sold, or if any illnesses were reported.
Staph food poisoning is caused by toxins produced by bacteria. The symptoms include sudden nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
Infections with certain types of E. coli bacteria can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, or other illnesses, including life-threatening kidney failure.
