November 18, 2015 — A man who was exposed to hepatitis A after eating at a McDonald’s restaurant in Waterloo, New York has filed a lawsuit, Reuters reports.
The man, Christopher Welch, is seeking class action status on behalf of everyone who was exposed. The lawsuit was filed in state court against Jascor Inc., a franchisee of McDonald’s Corp. (Case No. 49796).
Health officials are asking everyone without a vaccine to get tested for hepatitis A if they ate at the McDonald’s located at 2500 Mount Road on October 31, November 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8.
On November 13, Seneca County Health Department officials confirmed that an employee tested positive for hepatitis A and worked at the restaurant on those dates.
Health officials set up a makeshift clinic in the Mynderse Academy Gymnasium on Troy Street and vaccinated over 1,000 people over the weekend, CNY Central reports.
Seneca County Health Department Director Vicky Swinehart said:
“In Seneca County we have we have not had Hepatitis A outbreak before, at least a large breakout in the 23 years since I’ve been here. I’m glad to see we had such a good turnout and that people are taking this seriously.”
Hepatitis A is a highly-contagious viral disease that spreads through the fecal-oral route and causes liver damage. Symptoms of infection can take up to two months to appear after exposure. These symptoms may include sudden fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, dark-colored urine, jaundice, and more.
