What is McKesson Baby Powder?

McKesson Corp. sells two types of baby powder — one with cornstarch and another with talcum powder (talc). Cypress Medical Products, LLC markets McKesson Medi-Pak™ Performance Baby Powder Talc, which is lightly-scented and advertised to “keep skin soft and smooth.”

Baby Powder Lawsuits

The most popular talcum powder product in the United States is Johnson’s Baby Powder. The company is facing over 2,000 lawsuits from women with ovarian cancer who say they were never warned about the risk.

$72 Million Awarded in 1st Baby Powder Lawsuit

In 2016, the first lawsuit ended in a jury awarding $72 million to the family of Jacqueline Fox, an African-American woman from Alabama who died of ovarian cancer after using baby powder for decades. Over the next few months, two other women with ovarian cancer were each awarded $55 million and $70 million in trials in St. Louis, Missouri.

Evidence Linking Talc and Cancer

Evidence linking talcum powder and ovarian cancer dates back to the 1970s when particles of talc were found in the tissues of women who died of cancer. Even so, Johnson & Johnson aggressively advertised baby powder for adult women — especially African-American women.

What is the Risk?

In 2015, a study in Los Angeles estimated that African-American women who used talc on their genital area were 40% more likely to develop ovarian cancer. In 2003, a pooled analysis of 16 studies involving around 12,000 women estimated a 33% increased risk of ovarian cancer. Because the baseline risk of ovarian cancer is about 1.4% of all women, a 33% increased risk translates to a 1.8% risk overall.

Talc and Uterine Cancer

Ovarian cancer is not the only type of cancer linked to talcum powder. In 2010, a study found a 24% increased risk of endometrial cancer, the most common type of uterine cancer, in women who used talc on their genital area.

Symptoms of Uterine Cancer

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Abnormal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Feeling of pressure in the abdomen
  • Pain with urination or sexual intercourse
  • Persistent bloating
  • Tiredness
  • Indigestion or nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss without trying
