April 24, 2015 — The manufacturer of Mucinex has issued a recall for about 1.5 million bottles because the label may have incorrect information about active ingredients, such as acetaminophen.
The recall involves four different liquid medications that are sold over-the-counter for the treatment of cough, cold, flu, and congestion:
- Mucinex Fast-MAX Night Time Cold & Flu
- Mucinex Fast-MAX Cold & Sinus
- Mucinex Fast-MAX Severe Congestion & Cough
- Mucinex Fast-MAX Cold, Flu & Sore Throat
These products contain several active ingredients, inlcuding acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, phenylephrine and/or diphenhydramine.
The manufacturer, RB (formerly Reckitt Benckiser), warns:
“Consumers would not be adequately warned of side effects which could potentially lead to health complications requiring urgent medical intervention, particularly in the case of acetaminophen use in people with liver impairment, taking three or more alcoholic drinks or when taking other medicines containing this active ingredient without consulting a doctor.”
RB is asking consumers to dispose of the recalled products immediately. They have recommended taking steps like mixing the liquid medication with kitty litter or coffee grounds to make it unpalatable, sealing the mixture inside a bag, and throwing it away.
Acetaminophen overdoses can rapidly cause liver damage, organ failure, and death. Symptoms of acute liver injury may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain or swelling, nausea and vomiting, disorientation, and fatigue or sleepiness.
