Since the BP oil rig off the coast of Louisiana exploded and sank, scientists estimate that the well at the bottom of the Gulf could be spilling anywhere from 5,000 to 25,000 barrels of oil a day. And if the kink in the line breaks, up to 50,000 barrels a day could spill into the Gulf, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration memo obtained by the Mobile, Ala., Press-Register. So far, the Coast Guard estimates that over 1.6 million gallons of oil has been spilled.

President Barack Obama said the spill is a “potentially unprecedented” environmental disaster. He also said “BP is responsible for this leak. BP will be paying the bill.” A bill, which experts say could run into the billions and take years. While BP has acknowledged it is “absolutely responsible” for cleaning up the spill, BP CEO Tony Hayward blames Transocean, the owner of the oil rig.

But for businesses along the Gulf Coast the main question is how much revenue they will lose and for how long not whether the blame lays with BP or Transocean. The huge fishing, oyster, shrimp and other seafood industries along the Gulf Coast are facing years of polluted seafood and fishing grounds. The property and business owners along the sandy white beaches of the Gulf Coast that rely on tourism are also facing huge losses. A beach covered in black oil means no business for not just the resorts and condo owners, but also for the restaurants, souvenir shops, beach and water sports rental companies, miniature golf courses and more.
