November 29, 2023 — A man in Texas is recovering after a horrific oil field accident in which he was impaled by a 50-foot pipe.
The accident occurred in Wichita County at an oil field located off Highway 25 on Thursday, November 16.
At around 4 p.m., a 50-foot section of pipe fell and impaled a man who was working below. The pipe hit him in the shoulder area and exited below the belt, but miraculously missed any vital organs or bones.
Wichita County Sheriff David Duke said that multiple agencies responded to reports of an accident. They found a man who had been impaled by a metal pipe, with around 3 feet of pipe buried in the dirt and another 40 feet of pipe extending above him.
First responders were able to cut away most of the pipe, but he was unable to fit inside an Air Evac helicopter and had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance with about 2 feet of pipe in his body.
His wife told told KXAN News that the surgery was successful and he was walking the next day. Surgeons expect muscle damage to be the only long-term complication of the incident.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it has been ruled an accident.
