Is OxyElite Pro Dangerous?

OxyElite Pro is a dietary supplement commonly used to burn fat and build muscle. Unfortunately, it has recently been linked to a number of dangerous side effects. The original formulation of OxyElite Pro contained DMAA, an illegal stimulant drug that was linked to cardiovascular side effects. After OxyElite Pro was re-formulated with aegeline, it was linked to an epidemic of liver injuries, including one death.

Military Investigation of OxyElite Pro

OxyElite Pro was banned on military bases in 2011 because it contained DMAA. In August 2013, the Human Performance Research Center published the following report on OxyElite Pro dangers (PDF). The two-year safety review was conducted for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). They concluded that DMAA did not cause the deaths of four servicemen who were found to have DMAA in their bloodstream. However, they concluded that DMAA was potentially dangerous and should not be allowed on military bases.

OxyElite Pro Recalled

On November 10, 2013, the FDA announced a recall of OxyElite Pro in response to an epidemic of liver injuries. By that time, 56 cases of liver damage were confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Cases were reported in 13 states, with the majority in Hawaii.

Products included in OxyElite Pro recall:

  • OxyElite Pro Super Thermo Powder
  • OxyElite Pro Super Thermo Capsules
  • OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo Capsules

Cardiovascular OxyElite Pro Dangers

The original formulation of OxyElite Pro contained DMAA (1,3-Dimethylamylamine or “geranium stem”). Although USPLabs claimed DMAA was no more dangerous than caffeine, experts now agree that it is a potent stimulant drug with cardiovascular side effects.

Cardiovascular dangers of OxyElite Pro with DMAA:

  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Heart palpitations
  • Cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Heart attack
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure

Liver OxyElite Pro Dangers

OxyElite Pro was re-formulated with aegeline in April 2013, after the FDA banned DMAA. In May, the first cases of liver damage from OxyElite Pro were reported. By September, healthcare professionals in Hawaii linked OxyElite Pro to a cluster of liver injuries, including several cases of liver failure.

Liver dangers of OxyElite Pro:

  • Liver inflammation
  • Acute non-viral hepatitis
  • Jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin, eyes, mucous membranes)
  • Liver damage
  • Elevated liver enzymes in blood
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Hepatic encephalopathy (brain damage)
  • Liver failure
  • Hospitalization and surgery for liver transplant
