Oyster Industry Loss of Business Information
Oysters grow like weeds in the Gulf. They grow wild and in oyster farms. Mike Voisin, a member of the board of the Gulf Oyster Industry Council, said that the oil spill could have a huge impact on an oyster industry. He estimates the spill will have a $500 million-a-year economic impact along the Gulf Coast, more than half of that in Louisiana. Patrick Banks, head of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ oyster program acknowledged that while all species are in danger, oysters are especially at risk because “they can’t move away.” “This time of year, the animals are gearing up for reproduction,” Banks added. She expressed concern that depending on how much oil the oysters ingest, they might survive but be unable or less able to reproduce. “That could have a much larger population impact in years down the line.”
It is not only those that collect and distribute the oysters that are facing economic losses. Cooking and serving the oysters is also big business in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. New Orleans is famous for cooking up oysters and its oyster bars. But the same can be said of restaurants across the region.
