January 20, 2015 — Pacific Coast Fruit Co. is warning their customers about a recall for caramel apples that may be contaminated with Listeria.
Pacific Coast Fruit, of Portland, Oregon, sold pre-packaged Happy Apple-brand caramel apples, which were recalled on December 24.
Those apples were supplied by Bidart Brothers, a California-based company that recalled Gala and Granny Smith apples on January 9.
Pacific Coast Fruit Co. is now working to contact all customers and recall Happy Apple caramel apples that were sold after September 22, 2014.
The outbreak has sickened at least 32 illnesses in 11 states, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on January 10. Listeriosis contributed to at least three deaths, though seven sick people have died. One illness in a pregnant woman resulted in a fetal loss. Invasive meningitis infections have occurred in three otherwise healthy children under 15.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that two strains of Listeria monocytogenes in sick people matched those that were collected in an apple processing facility owned by Bidart Brothers.
Symptoms of listeriosis can take up to 70 days to appear. They may include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Health officials recommend avoiding pre-packaged, commercially-produced caramel apples that were made from Bidart Brothers apples, including various brands containing nuts, sprinkles, chocolate, and other toppings.
